English C.1720 Dog-Head Naval Cutlass

english-1720-doghead-cutlass-2

An extremely rare English c.1720 Dog-Head Naval Cutlass

This is one of the earliest known English naval cutlasses to be issued to seaman of the Royal Navy and the design is based on contemporary swords found in the Dutch East Indies, most particularly indigenous Kastane type swords.  For more information on the history of these cutlasses, please see the excerpt and images below from Boarders Away, by William Gilkerson.  The cutlass hilt has a very distinctive dog-head pommel and grooved grip.  The blade is plain and with an armourer’s stamp (probably German) to both sides.  Both the hilt and blade are of large proportions and this is very much a fighting sword.

Condition of the Cutlass

In excellent condition throughout and with no damage or repairs.

Specifications of the Cutlass

Blade length is 29.5 inches (35 inches overall).
