A scarce example of a British 1899 Pattern Cavalry Trooper’s Sword. These swords were issued at the end of the 19th Century and were a result of failures with previous patterns. Unfortunately, this pattern did not help matters and problems included the fact that the user’s hand tended to slip up and down the long grip, especially when hot and sweaty. The thickness of metal to the guard was also too thin, causing it to bend and buckle easily. Because of its general fragility, most examples were susceptible to service wear and many have battered guards and worn grips. This sword is quite typical of the type and has seen considerable service wear to the hilt. I have actually never seen one in very good condition unlike their previous and subsequent patterns. This was one of the reasons why it was replaced by the 1908 Pattern in a relatively short period of time.
Hilt stamped to Yeomanry Cavalry regiment
The hilt is stamped to the “I CO LY” – the “LY” represents Yeomanry Cavalry but have not been able to identify the “I CO”. Blade is dated to 1899 and re-issued in 1902. Complete with original steel scabbard. Blade length is 33.5 inches (40 inches overall).
