British 19th Century 1822 Pattern Infantry Officer’s Levee Sword

british-1822-pattern-levee-sword-2

An early example of a British 19th Century 1822 Pattern Infantry Officer’s Levee Sword

This is a levee pattern sword that would have been carried by an officer when off duty and probably attending ceremonial military occasions or regimental dinners and balls.  Is of typical 1822 pattern and with a gilt brass Gothic hilt and VR (Victoria) royal cypher inset to the hilt.  I would think that this sword dated from the late 1830’s/early 1840’s.  The grip is bound with fishskin and copper twistwire.  The blade is of early pipe back form and with etched decoration including royal cypher, victory wreaths and foliage.  No scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

The hilt is is fine condition – blade has wear and staining.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 32.5 inches (38 inches overall).
