British C.1780 Naval Officer Sword and Scabbard

english-1780-naval-sword-3

A scarce British c.1780 Naval Officer's Sword and Scabbard

A good example of a short hanger type carried by English naval officers during the last quarter of the 18th Century.  The hilt is brass, with a typical fluted shell guard and bone grip.  The pommel is faceted and with a domed top.  The blade is plain and single-fullered.  Complete with original leather scabbard and brass frog loop.  This is an interesting piece and the relative plainness of the sword might also indicate use by a lower rank.

Condition of the Sword

Hilt in excellent shape - blade with staining.  The scabbard is missing its chape.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 25 inches (29 inches overall).
