British Napoleonic Royal Navy Officer’s Sword

A scarce British Napoleonic Royal Navy Officer’s Sword

A c.1800’s naval sword carried by an officer in the British Royal Navy.  What makes this sword interesting is that it carries the owner’s initials on the hilt langet – very few swords of this period are onwr marked.  The hilt is of stirrup type and the grip is wrapped with fishskin and copper twistwire.  The blade is straight and decorated with nautical motifs, including anchor and bouys.  It is also has a royal crown and cypher.  No scabbard.  Although the condition of the blade counts against the sword, it is still very rare to find examples of British Napoleonic naval officers’s swords.

Condition of the Sword

Grip with some fishskin losses.  The blade is corroded in places, particularly towards the tip.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 29 inches (34 inches overall).
