C.WW1 Indian Assam Rifles Belt and Buckle

assam-rifles-belt-buckle-2

A rare and fine C.WW1 Indian Assam Rifles Belt and Buckle.  A scarce and good quality stamped brass belt buckle for a soldier in the Assam Rifles, probably during the First World War.  This is the oldest paramilitary force in India and can trace its history back to 1835 when it was originally formed by the British as the Cachar Levy.  It was formed to act as a protection force for the expanding British rule in the Assam region of India and during the First and Second World Wars, it served in both conflicts, both in Europe and India/Burma.

Designated the Assam Rifles in 1917

It was designated the Assam Rifles in 1917 and forces were amalgamated with the Gurkhas and probably explains the crossed kukris on the belt buckle.  The belt and buckle are in very good condition for it age and the leather is still strong.  Profusely marked to the inside of the belt with issue stamps.  The total length of the belt from end to end is 36 inches.
