English c.1690 Hunting Naval Officer’s Sword

1690-hunting-hanger-kings-head-mark-2

Excellent and scarce English c.1690 Hunting Naval Officer’s Sword

This is a very fine example of an English c.1690 hunting naval officer’s sword.  The sword comprises a staghorn grip and brass pommel and shell guard.  The slightly curved, unfullered blade is deeply impressed with a King’s head mark.  These marks are commonly associated with the German sword making family of Wundes, Solingen.  Many sword blades from this period were imported into England where they were mounted on English hilts.  This sword features a royal crown and profile to the pierced shell guard.  Swords of this type were very popular with English naval officers of the late-17th Century (see pic below) as they were effective within the cramped confines of a warship’s deck.

Condition of the Sword

In very good condition with fine patina to the hilt and blade.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 35 inches (41 inches overall).
