English C.1720 Brass-hilted Smallsword

english-1720-smallsword-2

A good, early example of an English c.1720 brass-hilted smallsword with distinctive double-edged blade.  The brass hilt has a pronounced oval and faceted pommel.  The grip is bound with thick copper twistwire.  The knucklebow is D-shaped and slightly swollen in the middle.  The ribbed double shell guards are small and very indicative of smallsword styles prevalent during the first quarter of the eighteenth Century, particularly in England.  These early examples of the smallsword form are actually quite rare, particularly with this type of blade and few original pieces exist. It was common for only a brief period and new hilt and blade designs superseded it after the mid-eighteenth century.

Condition of the Smallsword

The condition of the sword is very good for its great age with a nice honey coloured patina to the brass hilt.  Some appropriate age wear to the blade – the twistwire is slightly loose.  Blade length is 33 inches (40 inches overall).
