English C.1760 Cut Steel Ivory Hanger by Harvey

english-harvey-hanger-sword-2

A very good and early English C.1760 Cut Steel Ivory Hanger by Harvey.  The Birmingham sword making family were very prolific and there were a number of family members who worked from the mid-18th Century right through the 19th Century.  I would say that this sword was probably made by the first Harvey – Samuel Harvey – who was in operation from 1748-1800.  This short sword is of fine quality and comprises a cut steel pommel and crossguard.  The grip is made from ivory and is of spiral,  grooved shape.  The plain blade has a deeply impressed mark of HARVEY near the blade forte.  The blade is double-edged towards the end of the point.  Condition of the hanger is good with dark age toning to the blade and appropriate age wear in places.  Blade length is 14 inches (20 inches overall).
