American C.1780 Naval Seaman Cutlass

A scarce example of a home produced American naval seaman’s Cutlass.

Of typical crude manufacture and comprising a pierced iron hilt with a wooden grip.  Secured to pommel with a large nut.  The blade is simply forged and of unusually long length.  To see other examples of American naval cutlasses of the Revolutionary War period, please see Swords and Blades of the American Revolution by George C. Condition of the Cutlass

With commensurate age wear to both the hilt and blade.

Specifications of the Cutlass

Blade length is 34 inches (38 inches overall).
