english-1690-cavalry-broadsword-2

Scarce and early English c.1690 cavalry troopers's basket-hilted broadsword

This is late-17th/early 18th Century English cavalry trooper's basket hilt and would have been carried by a heavy cavalryman.  It features a large iron basket hilt of Scottish Highland style with heart-shaped and rounded piercings.  The pommel is apple-shaped and this feature is very typical of English cavalry trooper's swords of the period.  The blade is of backsword type and with a double fuller and is deeply impressed to both sides with the running wolf mark of Solingen, Germany - England purchased many blades from German sword makers at this time.

Condition of the Sword

With commensurate age wear to the hilt - blade in good condition for its age - replacement wooden grip.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 34 inches (39 inches overall).
