A rare and original British early 19th Century Naval Officer's Octant - maker marked to J W Norrie and Co., of London who produced naval scientific instruments to the Admiralty during the Napoleonic Wars. John William Norie was a famous naval instrument maker who took over the firm from his partner, William Heather, in 1813 - after 1816 the firm is known as Norie and Co. so I would expect this octant to be placed within this very narrow time frame. The octant is made from ebony and gilt brass with animal tooth inserts and measuring dial. In good overall condition although there are probably some parts probably missing - is a great and original momento from the time of the Age of Sail and Lord Nelson. Great for the collector of British Napoleonic maritime artifacts. The octant is 12 inches high.
